A shared server will hinder my control.
You get root access and flexible control over your applications. Specifically, you do get root access to your VPS, but there are a few subtle differences between root access to your VPS and root access to a dedicated server. For example, root access to a dedicated server allows you to load kernel modules and control hardware interfaces/settings; these things are not supported in VPS root access.
I can’t afford to be locked into a proprietary solution.
